Understand the forecast
The NWS forecasts contain periods with conditions, temperature, wind and reported precipitation probability. These are probabilities, not promises. Forecast updates may have gaps, and active alerts should be checked through your local NWS office. Coverage is limited to NWS-served U.S. locations.
Three practical techniques
| Step | What to do |

| Location accuracy | A forecast for one city may differ from a nearby mountain or shoreline. Select the closest supported coordinates. |
| Reading rain percentage | A 30% precipitation probability is not a forecast that rain will fall for 30% of the day. |
| Checking warnings | If an official alert is displayed, read the full alert and visit weather.gov for safety information. |
